Cendol is a type of dessert where you’ll see only three colours; brown, green and white. In fact, these are the main ingredients that make up the cendol.

Of course, other variations of cendol have much more ingredients besides these, including red beans, glutinous rice and grassed jelly. It is a simple dessert made of up starched noodle with green colouring (though most people will use grassed jelly these days) and topped up with shaved ice, much like its sibling, the Ais Kacang.

However, the shaved ice portion for cendol is typically less compared to Ais Kacang but you will still get palm sugar syrup poured onto the ice. The main ingredient that makes cendol appetizing is coconut milk.

Cendol is believed to be originating from Java, Indonesia but the popularity of this dessert make cendol an Asian dessert. You will see that not only Indonesian or Malays selling cendol but also Chinese and Indians.

Penang Food: Ais Kacang aka ABC

Ais Kacang or Ice Kacang, literally means Beans Ice in Malay is a local Malaysian dessert nice to have especially under hot, sunny weather. In some places in Malaysia, it is also known as air batu campur or ABC for short.

Ais Kacang consists of assortment of nuts, corns, red beans, jelly and even sliced of nutmeg and covered as much as possible with shaved ice that looks like shape of a mountain.

The shaved ice is then poured with black sugar and rose syrups to give its sweetness and also drizzled with some milk (either evaporated or concentrated). Some may even top it up with ice cream to make the dessert more appealing.

There are many ways to enjoy Ais Kacang. You can always start from the top of the mountain and go all the way down to the bowl or you can eat the ice bit by bit too. Some people will enjoy eating the Ais Kacang by mixing all the ingredients together before savoring it.

But whichever method you choose to enjoy your Ais Kacang, finish them fast before they turn into Ais Kacang soup, unless of course if you prefer it that way!
